Midnight Tube Ride?

After months and months of tube strikes, several opinions, and a lot of hustle it seems that the night tube will finally be happening after all. Who is affected? What lines will be going 24 hours? What will this mean for London? Dan Seamarks from University of Westminster shares all there is to know.

Dutch living in the UK (London

As more and more Dutch people move to the UK I wondered what moved those people for their emigration. What are the differences between the Netherlands and the United Kingdom (in this case mainly London) and why do we think this is a better place to live? And is it actually?

Freedom of Speech over Morals?

Charlie Hebdo shootings. Social Media exploded with the hashtag JeSuisCharlie to show respect towards the victims of the shootings and to support freedom of speech. What I would like to discuss is how far we can take freedom of speech without disrespecting others. What does freedom of speech actually mean nowadays?

Sunday 15 February 2015

Je suis Charlie, wait, who?

The shootings in Paris. Who has not heard of it over the past few weeks. The office of Charlie Hebdo magazine in Paris was attacked by, yes indeed, muslim attackers. The moment this happened everyone went online to show their respect and support by sharing the hasthtag #jesuischarlie.

I do not want you guys to get confused by what I am going to say, because what happened is horrible and freedom of speech is really important to me, but I would like to take a look at it from a different perspective. Everyone around me was posting #jesuischarlie and I was about to post it myself, because such events are not suppose to happen. But I did not actually know who or what Charlie Hebdo was so I  decided to google them before supporting something I know nothing about. It took me only 3 minutes of scrolling through google search images for me to decide I will not ever support such a magazine.

If the hashtag would have been different I might have shared it to show respect to what happened, but in my opinion saying I am Charlie is the same as saying I am racist and I hide behind freedom of speech. To me this is exactly what Charlie Hebdo is. I think this also shows the problems in our society when it comes to freedom of speech. I agree we should be allowed to say what we want, but shouldn't there be some sort of moral when it comes to the way you formulate them? Are we allowed to put a label on whole religion or group (in this case the Islam) when you are in a position to reach a lot of people? To put these labels on them in utterly disrespectful ways that first of all do not show any respect to those people whatsoever and secondly will affect people's views on this religion? After the attack muslim people were afraid to go out on the streets, and current events show that they should be afraid. The problem here lies completely with our messed up society and with ignorant people who actually think a few extremists who are not supporting their religion by their actions resemble the whole of islam culture.

Once again, those extremists are completely wrong in every way possible, but does that mean that Charlie Hebdo was right? Does that mean we should all stand behind every word they have said where they hurt people's feelings and got society even further away from accepting people around you?

I would like to know if you guys are okay with the way our freedom of speech works these days.

Little Life Update!

Hi there! It's been a while since I have told you anything about my plans for London and what has happened recently so I decided to give you a little update!

I am still planning to move to London! I actually already got into University of Westminster and I will be starting my Digital Media & Communications course on September the 15th! I am beyond excited and it honestly feels like a dream coming true! If someone had told me 4 years ago that I would be moving into my own little room in London when I just turned 18 I would have laughed in their face. Yet here I am, searching for a nice room in my favorite city in the whole wide world!
In the best case scenario I will be living in Camden in a few weeks since it's my favorite place in the world! (Who would have guessed any different)
I will stay in London for at least 3 years, maybe 4 if I decide to do my master as well but I really hope I will fall in love with this city more and more everyday and I hope to stay there.

Obviously I will have a lot more to blog about and I am definitely going to keep you guys updated with everything that will be going on!

Besides that, not a lot has happened lately. I just turned 18 (June 11th) and got the best birthday present I could ever wish for:  a MacBook!
And the highlight of my year this far has definitely been Amsterdam! About two weeks ago my best  pal and I went to Amsterdam for a little week and I had the best time ever. We walked around all parts of Amsterdam I had never seen before even though I come there regularly. And as tip of the iceberg, I SAW 5 SECONDS OF SUMMER! yeah baby! I know my fangirl heart is quite big and I am obsessed with every band you can think of but 5sos is definitely high on my list. I have the biggest crush on Mikey and when we found out they would be opening for 1D in Europe I immediately bought tickets. It was absolutely amazing and it was really nice to see 1D as well, since I used to be their biggest fan 4 years ago. Yes it was a week I won't forget!

Also a little fun story. Everyone thought 5sos were staying at the Krasnapolsky (?) hotel on the Dam but it turned out to be the old queen of the Netherlands who was staying there. I wonder what she was thinking when she saw all those fangirls waiting outside!

I will be going on holiday to Kos in two weeks so when I get back I will post some pictures and start posting more regularly! Have a nice summer everyone! Xx
